Shropshire Harmony Quire

SHQ at Bettws

Shropshire Harmony Quire are a small non-auditioned choir of mixed voices and instruments meeting once a month in Lydbury North Village Hall, South Shropshire. Musical Director Andy Watts of The Carnival Band harnesses the Quire's enthusiasm and energy.

We sing the lively and vigorous four-part music of the West Gallery singers and instrumentalists of the Georgian era and also some shape note/sacred harp music - richly melodic anthems from the American folk style. This is music full of life and joy.

Advised by Charles Wesley to "sing lustily and with good a courage" the amateur musicians of the day revelled in their music-making but their full-on style and undisciplined behavior led to their replacement by the organ and Victorian hymnal. We recreate the unique sound of these village musicians in hymns and anthems that contain folk qualities and surprising echoes of Handel.

The instruments play the vocal lines with a short introductory 'symphony'.
